Immigration in the Heartland: NPR Code Switch

lisa-dorner-NPR-Screen-ShotIn 2013, Reporter Abbie Fentress Swanson and Harvest Public Media received a grant from the Institute for Justice & Journalism’s “Immigration in the Heartland” fellowship to explore two rural communities where children and their families were living “In the Shadows of the Slaughterhouse:” Noel, MO and Garden City, KS–two communities that have taken remarkably different approaches to welcoming immigrants. In November, Abbie and I spoke about the changes seen in Missouri over the past 20 years, and in December 2013, the story about Noel, Missouri aired on National Public Radio.

“Parents as Stakeholders” at the University of Missouri

A core implication of my research centers on reconsidering how families and parents are involved in their children’s education. On November 12, 2013, I gave a keynote address about these topics at the first Hook Center Performance Excellence Symposium, Framing Parents as Stakeholders: Informing, Involving, Investing. In this address, I spoke about the “roots” and complex goals of parent engagement programs, and encouraged school leaders to consider what they want to affect as they inform, involve, and invest in families.
